INDIAN WOMEN’S FIRST TRANS HIMALAYAN JOURNEY 1997
"The Indian Women's First Trans Himalayan Journey 1997" banner and our Indian National flag proudly fluttered on top of India Col (20,178 ft) Siachen Glacier on a cold, crisp morning of 2nd September 1997.
Breathing the thin air, eight women from different modes of life, from different corners of India, stood with their support team and army liaison Officers, celebrating an arduous 7 months long journey which started from Bomdilla - Arunachal Pradesh on 4th February 1997 and culminated at the northern most tip of our country traversing 5000 km.
This expedition was organized and sponsored by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India and Tata Steel, Jamshedpur and was the first event under “Women’s Mountaineer & Adventure Network of India". A separate body was formed and registered in 1995 by women mountaineers for promotion of adventure activities among women of India.
